概要
学修到達目標 | The focus of this class is to enable the students to give effective speeches in front of an audience. At the end of the course the students will be able to: Understand the elements that make up a dynamic speech and/or presentation. They will understand how to write a well structured speech and they will build their vocabulary skills too. |

授業形態及び 授業方法 |
Students will work in pairs and sometimes groups on various class exercises connected to slowly building their skills in making speeches. Various short speeches will be given in small groups. The final group work will lead to a presentation being given to larger groups. This is a hands on class with many student centred activities. |
履修条件 | 1. English Communication Iは社会コミュニケーションサブメジャーコースの指定設置科目で、このサブメジャーを取る学生はEnglish Communication IIと共に履修しなければならない。 2. 教職免許を取る学生はEnglish Communication IIと共に履修しなければならない。 3. その他の学生は、English Communication IとEnglish Communication IIの両方をI・IIの順で履修することが望ましい。前期のみまたは後期のみ履修することは可能ですが、特にEnglish Communication IIのみ履修する場合、担当教員と相談して下さい。 |
授業計画
第1回 | 1 Introduction to the course, the teacher and other students. The teacher will give a small presentation about himself. The students will take notes and then will try to answer questions on the teacher. |

第2回 | In this class the students will spend time interviewing and getting to know each other. In small groups, the students will give impromptu speeches to introduce themselves to others. The syllabus will be examined and explained. All students will be informed of the grading system. |
第3回 | In this lesson the students will explore and identify as an overview the important aspects of making a speech. Parts of Martin Luther King's speech will be examined. Time will be spent improving vocabulary. |
第4回 | In week 4, the students will examine and discuss the important of eye contact in a speech. A short impromptu speech will be given whereby the emphasis will be on maintaining eye contact with several members of the audience. More vocabulary building exercises. |
第5回 | In this lesson, the students will examine the important elements in a speech introduction: A hook and the main points to be covered in the speech. Vocabulary building and study exercises. |
第6回 | In week 6, the students will learn how to control their voice in a speech. The use of one's voice in a speech is extremely important. Exercises will be used to show examples of stressing, pausing and stretching voice techniques. |
第7回 | Students will give short speeches on a variety of topics to practice and review the 2 core skills practiced thus far; eye contact and voice control. Vocabulary study. |
第8回 | Development of the speech in terms of explaining the main body points. Here the students will examine several written speeches to identify the written techniques used that makes a speech coherent and cohesive as a whole. Vocabulary exercises. |
第9回 | In this lesson the students will study about the importance of using visual and/or audio aids in a speech. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of media in their speeches to add dynamism to their presentations. Vocabulary work. |
第10回 | Preparation time allowed for the students to make progress towards a final presentation to be given in front of a group of students. Vocabulary study. |
第11回 | Here the student will examine how to successfully round out the speech with a solid conclusion. Vocabulary work and study. |
第12回 | In this class the students will be given time to write outlines for their speeches and gather their ideas for their final presentation. |
第13回 | The students in the lesson will explore the way to use computers as an aid to making a speech far more interesting and accessible to the audience. PowerPoint will be examined and other such software. |
第14回 | Students should have fully completed the writing of their final presentation. In this class each student will receive individual attention in a group scenario intended to polish and refine their final presentations. |
第15回 | Final presentation day. Here the students will perform their presentation in front of small group audiences. They will also hand in a final copy of their speech for assessment, too. |

No textbook will be used in this class. Students will be given specially prepared handouts to study from. Each student needs to have a file in which to keep these hand out and they also need to have a small notebook. An electronic dictionary is also highly recommended.
