概要
学修到達目標 | The main goal is to improve your English. The goals of this course are for students to a) improve listening and speaking skills, b) enjoy a few songs, c) learn to give opinions (spoken and written), d) improve knowledge of and use of vocabulary, and e) learn about English-speaking cultures. |

オンライン授業を実施 = Due to COVID-19 all classes will be held online. Various listening, speaking, reading, writing, and vocabulary building activities will be done in individually and in small groups. Intermediate and advanced proficiency speakers of English may be given more challenging assignments and opportunities for independent study. この授業はは全て英語で実施する。English Communication科目ではビジネス英語を学びますが、TOEIC試験を受ける必要はありません。 |
履修条件 | 1. English Communication Iは社会コミュニケーションサブメジャーコースの指定設置科目で、このサブメジャーを取る学生はEnglish Communication IIと共に履修しなければならない。2. 教職免許を取る学生はEnglish Communication IIと共に履修しなければならない。 3. その他の学生は、English Communication IとEnglish Communication IIの両方をI・IIの順で履修することが望ましい。前期のみまたは後期のみ履修することは可能ですが、特にEnglish Communication IIのみ履修する場合、担当教員と相談して下さい。 |

第1回 | Due to COVID-19, all ECI classes 1-3 were held online at http://moodle.ce.cst.nihon-u.ac.jp/. Contents included self-introduction using name, department, interests, and personality. Tasks include course registration (10 mins.), listenings (45 mins.), readings (20 mins.), a quiz (10 mins.), and a written introduction paragraph (25 mins.). |

第2回 | Conversations beginning with how and what greetings, adding detail to conversation, talking about daily activities with time and frequency adverbs. Tasks include listenings (50 mins.), readings (20 mins.), 4 quizzes (20 mins.), and a written paragraph (30 mins.). |
第3回 | Giving advice and talking about past regrets using should, should not, should have and should not have. Tasks include listenings (50 mins.), readings (30 mins.), 2 quizzes (20 mins.), and a writing task (20 mins.). |
第4回 | Buy the textbook (Rockstar English, Stage 0) to use with the online materials. As a review of Weeks 1-3, Units 1, pp. 10-19 (Greetings, using detailed answers, SNS, variety in greetings) are discussed with a focus on pronunciation and blended sounds. Tasks include listenings (50 mins.), readings (20 mins.), quizzes (20 mins.), and an online discussion writing task (30 mins.). |

第7回 | Unit 4, pp. 40-49 (The STAR technique, starting conversation, responding, asking questions) are discussed. Tasks include listenings (50 mins.), readings (20 mins.), quizzes (25 mins.), and a speaking activity (25 mins.). |
第8回 | Unit 6, pp. 60-69 (Talking about likes and dislikes, neutral English, using questions, vacation rentals) are discussed. Tasks include listenings (50 mins.), readings (20 mins.), quizzes (25 mins.), and a speaking activity (25 mins.). |
第9回 | Poster presentation review task for Units 1-6: The task includes making a poster with embedded audio or video (120 mins.). Grading criteria will be given in Moodle. |
第10回 | Unit 7, pp. 66-73 (Talking about future plans, phrases for probability, asking follow up questions, Cool Japan) are discussed. Tasks include listenings (50 mins.), readings (20 mins.), quizzes (25 mins.), and a speaking activity (25 mins.). |
第11回 | Unit 8, pp. 74-81 (Asking for and giving recommendations, accepting, declining, talking with locals) are discussed. Tasks include listenings (50 mins.), readings (20 mins.), quizzes (20 mins.), and an online discussion writing task (30 mins.). |
第12回 | Unit 9, pp. 82-91 (Talking about past plans, asking about plans and activities, evaluating plans, follow up questions, Katakana English, saying congratulations) are discussed. Tasks include listenings (50 mins.), readings (20 mins.), quizzes (20 mins.), and a speaking activity (30 mins.). |
第13回 | Poster presentation review task for Units 7-9: The task includes making a poster with embedded audio or video (120 mins.). Grading criteria will be given in Moodle. |
第14回 | Various topics: Language use and what's happening in the world Tasks include listenings and readings (70 mins.), quizzes (20 mins.), and an online discussion writing task (30 mins.). |
第15回 | Student should review the course (60 mins.) As a course review, a quiz will be given focusing on vocabulary and grammar used in the course (20 mins.). There will also be a course survey (20 mins.) and an online discussion on future study opportunities and future plans (20 mins.). |

成績評価の方法 及び基準 |
Quizzes and writing tasks for Weeks 1-3 20% Quizzes, writing tasks and projects for Weeks 4-15 80% Some spoken tasks will be scored credit/no credit. Feedback regarding performance will be given via email, through online discussions, and individually through Moodle. On written and spoken tasks comments and corrections will be given regarding format, spelling, grammar, word usage, writing style, pronunciation, fluency building, etc. |
